I am extraordinarily excited to announce the launch of my first photography series. This series will be concentrating on the subject of Fatherhood. I aim to celebrate dads and the influence they have on their little ones lives. “Focused on Fatherhood” is about capturing the everyday moments between a father and his children. The piggybacks, the tickle fights, the hugs, the kisses, story time, playing games… Whatever routines, customs or fun activities kids cherish doing with their daddys in a day, I want to encapsulate all of it for you.

As well as photographing these short-lived moments, I will be asking dads a series of questions. I hope to learn about the journey of fatherhood. I want to know what changed for men when their children entered their lives. What did they feel when they saw their baby for the first time? What is the most rewarding aspect of being a dad? What is the hardest part of being a parent? I want to know what these little people have taught their Dads, so far, and what the Fathers hope to teach their children. That is what this series is all about! I will provide clients with 10 edited photos as well as a framable card featuring the series of questions and answers. The answers will be the ultimate keepsake for your child to read as they grow older.

This is a project that I hold dear to my heart, I am immensely passionate about it. I have contemplated launching “Focused on Fatherhood” for the past few months but was nervous as I am an amateur photographer! I have always aspired to pursue my love of photography as more than just a hobby but I felt fearful and unsure of myself. One brilliant lesson that my Dad taught me was to listen to my heart and follow my dreams, no matter what.  This photography concept was born from his wisdom and love and the strength that is built in children from their fathers devotion. My Father will always be the kindest, gentlest, yet strongest man I will ever know. His eternal support and love has inspired me to follow my dreams and begin taking new steps to create in a myriad of ways. I dedicate this blossoming series to my Father and best friend, Randy Olson.

More to come tomorrow….

You may be wondering, “Why would she name her photography business “Poppies & Roses?”

My beautiful daughter, Olivia Rose was born on Remembrance Day. Poppies, as you already know, are the symbol for Remembrance day due to the poem “In Flander’s Fields”.

My Father, who passed in July, held Remembrance Day dear to his heart. As every year passed, he never missed a ceremony. I was reminded of the significance of Olivia’s birthday when I was emailing my Dad’s cousin Mitch a little while after she was born.

My Mother grows poppies in her garden and I reminisce fondly of a summer’s day where we photographed the poppies together, as she worked on her garden. She also grows yellow roses in front of her house. I have always admired her green thumb.

When I was a young girl, I would visit my Father in July, every summer. I have a memory in my heart of a day where we pruned roses together. Roses are a symbol I hold dear to my heart because of my memories of both of my parents planting them in their gardens, which is why we gave our daughter the middle name “Rose”.

So, there you have it! The meaning behind Poppies & Roses is very sentimental, and as always, family oriented. My family is my priority above all else.

Hi, my name is Laura Olson. I am a 27 year old Mother of one beautiful little baby, Olivia Rose. I have always had a passion for art, writing and photography. I guess I always put the thought of pursuing a career in photography on the back burner to my career in Hair Styling. I am a certified Nail Technician and Hair Stylist and I am taking a break from both right now to raise my 3 month old daughter.

Like a lot of moms, I spend most of my time capturing those special fleeting moments of my daughter’s life. I have found her every movement so fascinating. It is amazing how much these little beings can learn in a short amount of time. The joy that I get from photographing her and my nephew Blue, has sparked a soul thundering passion in me. It feels so good to be SO passionate and inspired by something I kept pushing aside for everything else.

My goal: To turn my hobby into a career. I know that I am an amateur. I know that I have A LOT to learn but, I am ready to put everything I have into this.

I hope that you enjoy my photography and watch my evolution from amateur to professional.

Laura
